Shawnee is a city in Johnson County, Kansas. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and has a population of around 62,209. In 1825, the Shawnee Indian Treaty was signed which made Johnson County the headquarters of the Shawnee Indians. A Shawnee Indian mission had been established at the present site of Shawnee in 1831. Shawnee was laid out as a town in 1857.
